Stopping a Rogue Buffalo in Queensland

Season 5 of The Huntsman opens in Queensland's traprock country, where Spartan ambassador Chris Waters and his mates go after a bull buffalo that had made a name for itself the hard way. What follows is a hunt built on persistence as much as anything else.

A Bull With a Reputation

By the time Chris and his crew set their sights on him, this buffalo was already well known around Nyora Station, just not for the right reasons. Pushed out of the herd, he had taken to flattening fences, tearing up neighbouring property and fighting anything that crossed his path. Station hands had gone after him before. He always slipped the search, and the reputation only grew.

Working Nyora's Traprock Country

Nyora's terrain does the buffalo as many favours as his own instincts. Steep, broken ground and thick scrub give him places to vanish that would frustrate most search efforts before they start. The episode spends real time on this part of the hunt: reading sign, working the rough country systematically, and covering ground that doesn't give up information easily.

It's the kind of country where persistence matters more than luck. Chris and his mates have to piece together where a smart, wary animal is choosing to hide, not just where he was last seen.

Built for Unpredictable Country

Chasing an animal that's already outsmarted other hunters means a shot rarely comes on flat, easy ground or with much warning. The SpringBok Quad Sticks were the choice of gear in this episode, and the terrain shows exactly why they suit this kind of hunt. The four-legged design keeps two points of contact with the ground even on broken, uneven country, and the silicone body lets you change position from kneeling to standing in seconds without fiddling with mechanical adjustments.

The wide rear cradle and MagnaSwitch™ quick-detach system add the other half of the equation. When a rogue bull that has spent months avoiding hunters finally gives you a window, there's no time to fuss with setup. The Quad Sticks attach in seconds and let you track a moving target rather than waiting for it to stand still.

The Encounter

After all the ground covered and all the history behind this particular bull, the payoff is an encounter the crew won't forget. It's a fitting way to open a new season: a hunt shaped by an animal that had already outlasted other efforts, on ground that tested the team and their gear at every turn.
